چکیده

In many animal taxa, parental care is a critical environmental influence on offspring growth and development (Clutton-Brock, 1991). Parents with high energetic investment in parental care influence offspring mass positively (Moreno et al., 1997; Burness et al., 2001). Provisioning offspring with an energy-rich and/or a high quality diet improves growth rate of offspring and reduces duration of developmental phases critical for offspring survival (Watanuki, 1992; Johnston, 1993; Meyer et al., 1994; Rogowitz & McClure, 1995; Rogowitz, 1996; Oksanen et al., 1999; Hunt & Simmons, 2000; Kunz & Ekman, 2000; Rauter & Moore, 2002). Variation in parental care can therefore result in variation in offspring traits. Variation in parental care, often described in terms of variation in the effects of parental care or as ‘parental performance’, can be an important evolutionary influence (Kirkpatrick & Lande, 1989, 1992; Lande & Kirkpatrick, 1990; Cheverud & Moore, 1994; Mousseau & Fox, 1998; Wolf et al., 1998). A consideration of the evolutionary effects of parental performance, however, requires an explicit consideration of both environmental and genetic influences over multiple generations (Cheverud & Moore, 1994). Like any parental trait, parental performance may be influenced by the environment to which the parent is exposed (Fig. 1: path 1) and the genes expressed in the parent (Fig. 1: path 2). Paternal care: direct and indirect genetic effects of fathers on offspring performance.

Knowledge of how genetic effects arising from parental care influence the evolution of offspring traits comes almost exclusively from studies of maternal care. However, males provide care in some taxa, and often this care differs from females in quality or quantity. If variation in paternal care is genetically based then, like maternal care and maternal effects, paternal effects may have import...

Biparental behavior in the burying beetle Nicrophorus orbicollis: a role for dopamine?

Burying beetles Nicrophorus orbicollis exhibit facultative biparental care of young. To reproduce, a male-female burying beetle pair bury and prepare a small vertebrate carcass as food for its altricial young. During a breeding bout, male and female behavior changes synchronously at appropriate times and is coordinated to provide effective care for offspring. Although the ecological and evoluti...

The influence of maternal effects on indirect benefits associated with polyandry.

Despite numerous and diverse theoretical models for the indirect benefits of polyandry, empirical support is mixed. One reason for the difficulty in detecting indirect benefits of polyandry may be that these are subtle and are mediated by environmental effects, such as maternal effects. Maternal effects may be especially important if females allocate resources to their offspring depending on th...

Evolution of elaborate parental care: phenotypic and genetic correlations between parent and offspring traits

The evolution of elaborate forms of parental care is an important topic in behavioral ecology, yet the factors shaping the evolution of complex suites of parental and offspring traits are poorly understood. Here, we use a multivariate quantitative genetic approach to study phenotypic and genetic correlations between parental and offspring traits in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides. T...
